Carifesta XIV : entre fierté et grincements de dents

Tandis que les pays de la Caricom, dont Haïti, ont exposé leurs produits à la foire culturelle « Grand Market » le dimanche 19 août 2019 au Queen’s Park Savannah, le chanteur Paul Beaubrun et son band se sont produits au Queen’s Hall. Une quatorzième édition de Carifesta qui, pour le pays, se poursuit jusqu’à cette date entre honneur et cris du cœur.

Haïti est en plein dans la quatorzième édition de la Carifesta. Groupes de danse, artistes et exposants font de leur mieux pour honorer Haïti à ce grand rendez-vous régional. Malgré tout. Les difficultés logistiques pleuvent de partout, mais certains préfèrent les surpasser quitte à utiliser leurs propres moyens. Pour eux, l’essentiel c’est de faire bonne figure d’abord pour soi, pour sa marque et pour Haïti. L’essentiel c’est de transmettre la culture haïtienne sous son meilleur jour.
Au Queen’s Hall, c’est ce que Paul Beaubrun and Band ont fait sur scène. Le fils de Manzè et de Lòlò, accompagné de trois autres musiciens, a séduit un public majoritairement anglophone. Pourtant, pas une seule chanson en anglais n’est sortie du répertoire du groupe. Ils n’avaient que la musique racine, traditionnelle, agrémentée de la touche éclectique et moderne de Ti Paul puisée dans le rock, le blues, entre autres. Et, bien sûr, cette séquence de “Ayibobo” qui n’en finissait pas.
« Ne pas chanter en anglais c’était un choix. Le choix d’interpréter davantage de chansons traditionnelles avec mes propres arrangements. Ces chansons qui traduisent la beauté de chez nous, qui charrient ce qui fait notre identité comme Haïtiens. J’ai voulu que les gens comprennent aussi l’origine de la musique racine avec une particularité moderne… », explique le guitariste. Beaubrun Fils précise que ce choix est venu de par lui-même. Les trois morceaux interprétés, “Èzili”, “Simbi dlo” et “Gade sa yo fè m” se sont également imposés d’eux-mêmes.
Heureux et fier comme lui seul, Paul Beaubrun se réjouit de sa toute première participation à Carifesta. « Je suis très honoré d’avoir représenté mon pays, d’avoir fait partie de ces artistes venus apporter une culture que les gens d’ici peuvent apprécier », affirme l’auteur de “Ayibobo”, cet opus qui a été en considération pour un Grammy Awards. En transe avec sa guitare, l’homme aux longs dreads locks à l’allure d’un artiste de rock and roll s’est immergé dans ce bain culturel dont il était lui-même l’artisan. « C’était vraiment extraordinaire : les lumières, la scène. Le public également m’a communiqué une bonne énergie. J’ai senti qu’ils ont vraiment apprécié », indique le chanteur qui espère davantage de liens entre Haïtiens et Trinidadiens.
Le cri du cœur des exposants
Au Grand Market du Queen’s Park Savannah sont exposés tout au long du déroulement de la Carifesta les différents produits des 20 pays participants. Un grand village culturel où les exposants haïtiens se rendent bien sûr tout en se trouvant confrontés à des difficultés spécialement d’ordre logistique.
Dans la catégorie mode, le designer Michel Châtaigne expose trois de ses collections : Greener, Roots et Danse bleue. Monsieur Châtaigne, un habitué de cette grand-messe interculturelle, se plaint du manque de support de l’État haïtien dans cette édition de Carifesta. « Ils nous ont payé un billet d’avion et nous ont placés dans un hôtel et c’est tout. Nous dépensons près de $100 pour le transport par jour, nous achetons de la nourriture, les décorations pour nos stands, et les $ 800 de per diem accordés par l’État ne peuvent vraiment pas couvrir toutes ces dépenses. Cependant, ce n’était pas comme cela dans les éditions précédentes », se plaint l’esthéticien. « Il ne fallait pas nous inviter s’il n’y avait pas assez d’argent », lâche Michel Chataigne sans prendre de gants.
Shella Privert fait partie des artisans de la délégation du Bureau du secrétaire d’État pour l’Intégration des personnes handicapées. Elle ramène d’Haïti des sacs à main, des jupes pour enfants, des accessoires confectionnés par des enfants à mobilité réduite et démunis. À défaut de trouver un espace approprié pour exposer ses articles, elle partage le stand du ministère de la Culture. À l’instar de Michel Châtaigne, la militante de longue date pour le respect des droits de ses pairs ne mâche pas ses mots. « Zéro. Côté logistique surtout. Le premier jour, je n’ai pas pu trouver un endroit et j’ai raté l’exposition. Nous, les Haïtiens, nous ne faisons pas preuve d’entraide ni de collaboration », fustige madame Privert, qui prend son baptême de feu à ce grand événement caribéen.
Représentante de plusieurs groupes d’artisans (Noailles, Jacmel, Plateau central), Martine Bourjolly Cantave place ces difficultés sur le dos du « lockdown ». « On a eu “peyi lòk” ; on a eu la démission du Premier ministre Céant, ce qui justifie les retards enregistrés. Cette situation a désorganisé et démotivé spécialement les artisans. Pourtant, on était les premiers à prendre contact avec les autorités trinidadiennes », raconte madame Cantave.
En attente d’une conférence de presse avec les responsables de la délégation haïtienne, Carifesta se poursuit jusqu’au 25 août 2019.
